AFP - A violent storm lashed Pope Benedict XVI and around one million pilgrims at an open-air service in Madrid, forcing him to cut short his speech and drenching the faithful who had waited for hours in blistering heat.

As the heavens opened during World Youth Day celebrations Saturday night, Benedict's skullcap was swept off and an assistant tried to shelter the 84-year-old pontiff with a large white umbrella.

The pope, his white hair blown into disarray, gripped a copy of his sodden speech, the pages and his vestments flapping in the wind.

A sea of pilgrims, by some reports more than a million, tried to take shelter under large white and yellow umbrellas at the vast esplanade -- the size of 48 football fields -- at the Cuatro Vientos (Four Winds) airbase outside Madrid.

Others danced in the rain, but the vast majority with no shelter just got wet.

When the rain eased some 20 minutes later, the pope declared to cheers: "Thank you for your joy and endurance. Your strength is greater than the rain.

"The Lord with the rain has given us many blessings. In this too you are an example."

The pope then left the stage to change and returned wearing a golden mitre, draped in a golden cloak and clutching a golden crucifix before resuming his speech.

Firefighters were seen checking the stage for storm damage before the leader of the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics returned.

Police prevented pilgrims sheltering under any structures. Six youths were slightly injured but needed no treatment when the wind blew a down a tent, a spokeswoman for the event said.

The pope was seated on a large white throne on a vast white, wave-shaped stage and beneath a giant parasol "tree", made of interwoven golden rods, when the deluge broke.

Also attending the service were Spain's Crown Prince Felipe and his wife Letizia.

The pilgrims are supposed to spend the night in the open air at the base, eight kilometres (five miles) southwest of Madrid, where Benedict isjavascript:void(0) to celebrate the closing mass of the August 16-21 youth festival on Sunday morning.

As he bade farewell to the crowds, the pope said: "We have lived through an adventure together. Firm in the faith, you endured the rain.

"Before going I want to say goodnight to you all: May you rest well, with the sacrifice you are making and that I have no doubt you offer generously to the Lord, we will see each other tomorrow, God willing.

He then thanked the pilgrims for the "marvelous example" they had given. "Just like tonight, with Christ you can always face the tests of life," the pope said.

In the part of his speech that he was able to deliver he called on young people to "be afraid neither of the world, nor of the future, nor of your weakness.

"The Lord has allowed you to live in this moment of history so that, by your faith, his name will continue to resound throughout the world."

The deluge brought dramatic relief to pilgrims who had been desperately seeking any shade from the fierce August heat, some crouching behind emergency vehicles or portable toilets.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church earlier warned against "false gods" as he celebrated mass in Madrid's Almudena Cathedral.

In white cassock and a white, gold-embroidered mitre, he told 6,000 young people preparing to join the priesthood: "You may be shunned along with others who propose higher goals or who unmask the false gods before whom many now bow down.

"Approach the priesthood only if you are firmly convinced that God is calling you to be his ministers, and if you are completely determined to exercise it in obedience to the Church?s precepts."

These include "the decision to live in celibacy for the sake of the kingdom of heaven and, leaving aside the world?s goods, live in austerity of life and sincere obedience, without pretence".

Thousands of child abuse claims, to which the pope made no direct reference, have forced the Roman Catholic Church to be more aware of the psychological maturity of those entering the priesthood.

The pope drew a thunderous applause as he announced he would bestow an extremely rare honour on a Spanish saint, Saint John of Avila, by proclaiming him a doctor of the Church.

Only 33 doctors of the Church -- reserved for figures of eminent doctrine and remarkable holiness -- have been proclaimed since 1295, and the last was in 1997.

The sheer scale of the celebrations in Madrid has sparked angry demonstrations at a time of economic hardship, with unemployment for under-25s running at more than 45 percent.

Thousands of protesters marched in central Madrid late Friday to protest the cost and to decry police crackdowns on earlier demonstrations.

But organisers say most of the cost will be covered by a registration fee from the pilgrims, and the celebration will be a massive tourist boost for Spain.

About 100 gays and lesbians protested on Saturday against the papal visit and the Vatican's fierce opposition to same-sex marriages.

Thousands of outraged demonstrators have taken to the streets of Madrid, the capital of Spain, to protests the costly four-day visit of Pope Benedict XVI.

Hundreds of groups, including members of Spain's M-15 movement, took part in the demonstrations across the city center on Wednesday, AFP reported.

"We criticize this scandalous show at a time of such a terribly distressing economic situation, with entire families unemployed," said protester Evaristo Villar of Christian Networks (Redes Cristianos).

The official cost of the visit, excluding the price of upholding security, has been estimated at around EUR 50.5 million, but many of the protesters say the real cost to taxpayers will be well over EUR 100 million.

The demonstrators shouted several slogans including, “The pope's visit, not with my tax money!”

Dozens of riot police were deployed to prevent any clashes between demonstrators and Catholic groups. Only minor incidents were reported.

"I was at the protest with my father, and one of the Catholics punched me in the face," an 18 year-old protester said who was bleeding from the nose.

Pope Benedict is expected to arrive on Thursday. The visit comes at a time when Spain is struggling to get out of the recession that has crippled the country's economy.

The current unemployment rate stands at 20.89 percent. However, the youth unemployment rate is over 45 percent.

Spain's M-15 movement was born on May 15 to protest the government's bad management of the economy.

Spanish police say eight demonstrators were arrested and 11 people injured in clashes between riot police and protesters opposed to a four-day visit by Pope Benedict XVI for World Youth Day events.

A police official said Thursday that two of the people injured in the disturbances in Madrid were police officers.

Violence broke out Wednesday night after a march by thousands of people angry that, among other things, taxpayer money is being spent on the festival that attracts thousands on pilgrimmages from around the world annually.

The Pope's visit starts Thursday.

Police wielding truncheons charged demonstrators several times in Madrid's Puerta del Sol plaza, scene of anti-establishment rallies in recent months.

The police official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with department rules.
Earlier this week, a chemistry student working as a volunteer for the Pope's visit to Madrid was arrested on suspicion of planning a gas attack targeting protesters opposed to the pontiff's stay.

A police official said the suspect is a 24-year-old Mexican student specializing in organic chemistry. She would not say whether investigators believe the man was actually capable of carrying out a gas attack, and did not know if he actually had chemicals that could have been used to assault the protesters.

The detainee was identified by the Mexican Embassy in Madrid as Jose Perez Bautista from Puebla state, near Mexico City.

MADRID - Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday denounced the profit-at-all-cost mentality he says is behind Europe's current economic crisis. The pontiff insisted that morals and ethics must play a greater role in formulating economic policy in the future.
"Man must be at the centre of the economy and the economy must not be measured only by the maximization of profit but according to the common good," the pontiff told reporters aboard his plane as he travelled to Madrid for the Catholic Church's World Youth Day.

The weeklong Catholic event is taking place against the backdrop of the European debt crisis, which has hit Spain hard.

Benedict's plane touched down in Madrid shortly before noon (1000 GMT) to a crowd of hundreds of young pilgrims cheering and waving mainly Spanish flags.

Pope Benedict was met off his plane by King Juan Carlos Queen Sofia. Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and conservative opposition leader Marian Rajoy, the man forecast to take power in November elections, were also present.

Many Spaniards have balked at the cost of the visit at a time of economic difficulty for many. Spain has a nearly 21 per cent jobless rate.

Hours before the pontiff's arrival, riot police and protesters opposed to his stay clashed in downtown Madrid. Police said eight demonstrators were arrested and 11 people were injured in the disturbances Wednesday night in the city's Puerta del Sol plaza.

On Tuesday, police arrested a chemistry student working as a volunteer for the pope's visit on suspicion he was planning a gas attack on protesters opposed to the pontiff's visit, officials said. The 24-year-old Mexican student, identified by the Mexican Embassy in Madrid as Jose Perez Bautista from Puebla state, was expected to appear in a Madrid court Thursday.

Organizers expect a million or more young people from 193 countries to attend the festival.

The main events are a prayer vigil with the 84-year-old Pope and outdoor sleepover for pilgrims Saturday night at a sprawling air base, and Mass there the next morning.
The pope's attendance shows how much a priority he places on this economically troubled country, which has departed sharply from its Catholic traditions and embraced hedonism and secularism. In the economic bust, he may be hoping to lure back some of his straying flock.

This will be the third time the pontiff has visited Spain since his papacy began in 2005.

The visit also comes as Spain gets ready for early elections in the fall. While the church officially keeps out of politics, it will be sure to be watching closely because the outcome could affect Spain's direction on hot-button ethical issues.

The election will pit the ruling Socialists, who irked the Vatican with social reforms including gay marriage and a law allowing 16-year-olds to get abortions without parental consent, against conservatives who tend to back church thinking on such issues and are heavily favoured to win.

In Spain the church faces a congregation for whom being Catholic is more a birthmark than a way of life. A poll released in July says that while 72 per cent of Spaniards identify themselves as Catholic, 60 per cent say they "almost never" go to Mass and only 13 per cent every Sunday.

Except for a trip Friday to a historic monastery in El Escorial, 50 kilometres (30 miles) northwest of Madrid, the Pope will spend the whole visit in Madrid, meeting with young people, hearing confession from some of them, riding through the city in his pope-mobile and greeting young nuns, seminarians and university professors, among other activities.

More than 100 priests from Madrid's poorest parishes have added their voices to the growing protest at the cost of Pope Benedict's visit to Madrid next week.

An umbrella group – the Priest's Forum – says the estimated €60m (£53m) cost of the papal visit, not counting security, cannot be justified at a time of massive public sector cuts and 20% unemployment in Spain.

Evaristo Villar, a 68-year-old member of the group, said he objected to the multinationals with which the Catholic church has had to ally itself to cover the costs of the "showmanship" of the event.

"The companies that are backing World Youth Day and the pope's visit leave much to be desired," he said. "They are the ones who, together with international capital, have caused the crisis. We are not against the pope's visit, we are against the way it is being staged."

The more than 100 corporate sponsors of the event include Coca-Cola, Telefónica and Santander. Opponents of the visit have set up a Facebook page calling for a boycott of the sponsors. Some 140 groups, among them the secular organisation Europa Laica (Secular Europe), are against the visit.

"Catholics can go wherever they like in Madrid but the freedom of movement of the rest of us is restricted," said Francisco Delgado, leader of Europa Laica, on discovering that the city had prohibited his group's proposed march.

Europa Laica plans to march under the slogans "Not a penny of my taxes for the pope" and "For a secular state". There is particular ire that the some 500,000 pilgrims expected in the city will get free transport. Madrid metro fares rose by 50% on Monday.

"With the economic crisis we are going through, we can't pay for this. The church should set the example," said a spokesman for the Indignados movement, which has staged high-profile protests in central Madrid. "They propose to spend €60m when the regional government has just cut €40m from the education budget."

Yago de la Cierva, the executive director of World Youth Day 2011, an event built around the papal visit, said: "We have made a huge effort to be moderate and economically responsible. The new generations – young people today – they like big events and the church uses all the tools that exist to present the message of Jesus Christ."

Interest in the Catholic church is on the wane among young people in Spain. A recent survey by the national statistics office showed that the number of believers aged 18 to 24 has fallen by 56% in the past 10 years.

The pope's visit to Barcelona last November was poorly received, with the popemobile forced to drive at top speed past small groups of the faithful along mainly deserted streets.

- que mantienen miles de catequistas dando su religión en las escuelas públicas:

- que reciben miles de millones de euros al año del Estado

Por todo ello los ciudadanos y ciudadanas firmantes nos manifestamos en contra de que estos viajes se paguen con el dinero público, y exigimos de las administraciones que no se paguen estas visitas.
